Mathews family papers, [manuscript], 1792-1900.

The papers contain saddlers accounts and memoranda, 1792-1817, and estate accounts, 1847-1848, of Joseph Mathews; arithmetic book, 1809-1820; diaries, 1864, kept by Joseph William Mathews, while serving in Reynold's Brigade during the Atlanta Campaign, including account of battle of Rocky Face Ridge, descriptions of fighting and skirmishing around Atlanta, May 8-Aug. 2, 1864, and desertion of Confederate troops, as well as his personal accounts, 1873-1884; and correspondence, ca. 1861-1900, of members of the Mathews family. They also include a citation from Governor Joseph Brown of Georgia for the use of slave labor in aiding of the war effort, 1861; printed general orders of Confederate General Robert E. Lee related to desertion and military discipline, Feb. 1865; and a map of Lewisburg, W.Va., 1780.
